I once saw a report on our local TV station about the swiss town Stein am Rhein, close to the Bodensee (Lake Constance for our english and french speaking visitors), and I knew I had to visit this place soon. The chance came when Lisa moved to live with her Mama in Wallisellen, Switzerland.

The city got founded around the year 1000 by King Heinrich II., who wanted to have a close eye on that area, where an important road meets a big river. In the 15th century the free city had to go into an alliance with Zürich and Schaffhausen, to keep the Austrians at bay, and therefore slowly came under swiss ruling.

Stein am Rhein is a gem with a wonderful old town, with richly decorated half-timbered houses, several beautiful churches and towers, the big stream Rhein cutting through it and low forested hills surrounding it.
