Wilhelma is the name of the Zoo of the state capital Stuttgart. The Zoo itself got founded in 1953 and is in an old park from
1846. The name comes from the then king, who ordered the construction of the pavillons and the park: King Wilhelm I of Württemberg.
The zoo itself got started shortly after WWII by the then director of the park - more or less against the will of the state government.
He started with animal shows in 1949 until around 1955. Only in 1961 did the state parliament approve of the expansion from a park into
a zoo.
The Wilhelma is famous for its ape and monkey-keeping program.
The Wilhelma is actually a very nice zoological/botanical garden, but I find it as a whole and talking about the specific areas for each kind of animal too small -
especially as there's right next to it a public park, that would be a wonderful extension for the Wilhelma!
Here one can see what I am talking about. The Wilhelma is the (more crowded) area between Neckartalstraße and Pragstraße and the park is the large area with more open green patches (Rosensteinpark). What a phantastic zoo that would be!!!
