Schloß Solitude

24 September 2005

The Schloß Solitude got built between 1764 and 1775 under Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg in the Rokkoko Style of the Castle Sanssouci near Potsdam. It's actually a pretty small building, only for representation. All other rooms like sleeping rooms, saloon, servants room and dining rooms were part of a string of external buildings, called Kavaliersbauten ( officers' and cavalry buildings), they were located behind the castle in a rolling line.

Behind the castle were extensive grounds, like an Orangery, or hunting grounds with little pavillons spread over them for resting. Today this is part of one of the recreation areas of Stuttgart, and the artificial Bärenseen (Bear Lakes) are there, too.

From the Castle Solitude went a road straight as a ruler (in most parts it's still used nowadays) for 13032 metres and 14 centimetres to the Castle Ludwigsburg. The castle in Ludwigsburg has been the seat of Duke Carl Eugen, after relocating from Stuttgart.

The Solitude is part of the City of Stuttgart.
